If you put a second-degree equation into the form
ax2 + bx + c = 0,
then
x = (-b ± (b2 - 4ac)½) ÷ 2a.
Remember to follow the proper order of operations (parentheses first, etc.). Note that the ± will result in two answers, as should be expected from a second-degree equation. If you are doing a word problem, substitute each answer into the problem to see if one is or both are ridiculous (I call it the ridiculous test; it saved me several times).
