Here are some facts that can help you think about the problem:
==> 3 cats plus 1 cat = 4 cats
==> 3 school-buses plus 1 school-bus = 4 school-buses
==> 3 ham Sandwiches plus 1 ham sandwich = 4 ham sandwiches
==> 3 calling birds plus 1 calling bird = 4 calling birds
If you think about those other situations long enough to pick up the pattern,
you'll soon realize that
3x plus 1x = 4x
You cannot add 3x and 1. You can add 3x and x and get 4x though.
When you add x plus x plus x, you are essentially adding three x terms together. This simplifies to 3x, which is the same as x multiplied by 3. So, x + x + x = 3x.
x=8
3x+4=10 To solve: 3x+4=10 3x=6 x=2
add; 5x =20 so x = 4
x = 7
3x + x + 10 + x = 5x + 10
3x+11+5x=75(add 5x and 3x) 8x+11=75(-11) 8x=64(/ 8) x=8(ANSWER)
3x+x=4x. The 3x is just an easier way of stating x+x+x, and then you would just count the x's up like normal to create a total. You can also do this with larger numbers. For example, if you have 100x+500x, you would still add the numbers together to create a total of 600x. As long as the variables (x, in this case) are the same in the numbers you're adding (i.e., you can't add 3x+y together) you can just add the numbers to create your total.
5x-3x+x+8 = 2x+1+x+x 3x+8 = 4x+1 3x-4x = 1-8 -x = -7 x=7 Hope that helps.
3x+5<x+11 3x<6 x<2
-3x-8+4x=17(-3x+4x)-8=17 ;combine like terms(x)-8=17 ;add 8 to both sidesx=25
