*** NOTE ***

It used to be that you could properly use answers.com's inline editor to add superscripts and subscripts, allowing proper notation of exponents. Sadly, the editor really really sucks now, and math is pretty much illegible in this system (as you can see below). I've had it. I quit...

To factor that, you can use a principle called the difference of squares: any polynomial in the format a2 - b2 can be factored out to (a + b)(a - b). In this case, x4 is equal to x22, and 1 = 12, so we can say:

x4 - 1

= (x2 + 1)(x2 - 1)

You may note that the second factor is itself another difference of squares, so we can actually repeat that process:

= (x2 + 1)(x + 1)(x - 1)

So x4 - 1 is the difference of squares, so x4 - 1 = (x2 - 1)(x2 + 1) = (x + 1)(x - 1)(x2 + 1).

How do you factor completely x to the twenty-fourth power minus 1?

You start by using the difference of squares: x24 - 1 = (x12 + 1)(x12 - 1) The second term is again a difference of squares, so you can apply this special factoring once again.
