Example: 30 and 42
1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 15, 30
1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 14, 21, 42
Draw a circle around the sixes.
Numerators and denominators are just numbers. List the factors of each and circle the numbers that appear on both lists. These are common factors.
Write the factors of the first number in the left circle. Write the factors of the second number in the right circle. Write the numbers that are the same in each individual circle in the space where they intersect.
List the factors of each of the numbers in the set. Write down the numbers that appear on all the lists. Choose the largest one.
To find the greatest common factor of two numbers first factor each number into its prime factors. Next circle all the factors that are in both numbers. 96=2x2x2x2x2x3 72=2x2x2x3x3 2x2x2x3=24
The list of prime numbers is infinite. There are two factors for each.
Prime numbers
Example: What are the common prime factors of 120 and 252?Find the prime factorization of each number by breaking it down into the lowest possible numbers that can be multiplied together to make the original number.120 = 2x60 = 2x2x30 = 2x2x2x15 = 2x2x2x3x5252 = 2x126 = 2x2x63 = 2x2x3x21 = 2x2x3x3x7Notice that there are 2 2's and a 3 in each factorization: the common prime factors are 2, 2, and 3.
If they are prime numbers only 2 factors but if they are composite number they will have more than 2 factors
Prime factor each number. Circle the factors that are in all three numbers. Multiply those factors. 27=3x3x3 54=2x3x3 72=2x2x2x3x3 3x3=9 is the GCF
Please tell us your set of numbers.
The prime factors are the factors of its square root, each one appearing twice as often.
The numbers that multiply are called factors.
