Natural numbers are also known as counting numbers. We assign to each object a natural number when we count. For example is you have 5 children and you count them, you are really forming what mathematicians call a one to one correspondence between the natural numbers 1 to 5 and the 5 kids.

So the short answer is we use them to count. But in fact they are used for many more things.
