Depends on the breaker. If the load at the outlets is unknown then the standard rules of 80% apply.

You can only load a circuit 80% of it's maximum value. For instance, if you're connecting your GFCI outlets to a 15 amp breaker you can only have a maximum of 12 outlets.

If it's a 20 Amp breaker then you're allowed up to 16 outlets and so on.

In the US, you are limited to 13 receptacles on a 20 amp circuit and 10 receptacles on a 15 amp circuit in commercial or industrial installations. Any or all of these can be gfci-protected. You can install one gfci, the first one from the panel, and protect any or all the others from that one.

As many as you like, provided there is never more than 1,920 watts being used full-time in the whole branch or more than 80 percent used by any one attached appliance.

According to the National Electrical Code, in force in many countries, you cannot have more than 10 outlets on a 15-A branch and not more than 13 on a 20-A branch circuit, based upon a budget presumption of 180 VA per outlet strap (i.e., single, duplex or triplex outlet receptacle). NFPA 70:220.3(9), 2011.

The electrical code does not have a requirement for the total number of outlets that can be installed on a GFCI circuit. It is the total wattage that will be used on that circuit that determines the number of outlets you can install. A 20 amp circuit at 120 volts equals 2,400 watts. The total safe load is 60% of that 2,400 watts or 1,440 watts. As long as you do not exceed that limit you can install pretty much as many as you want. I personally try to never exceed 15 maximum on a circuit if I know for sure they will never be overloaded.

How do you find a triped circuit?

Check the circuit panel / breaker box. The tripped breaker should be partway between 'OFF' and 'ON'. If nothing else, turn the breakers off then on, one at a time and when the tripped breaker is reset, the circuit should be live again. Also check GFI outlets. If one is in fault condition, it will need to be reset. If the tripped GFI outlet is protecting other outlets, they will come back when the tripped GFI is reset. These sockets seem to hide in many cases... Behind microwave ovens for example or refrigerators.

If you're using a GFCI breaker then the entire circuit will be protected by just the breaker alone. Every receptacle, switch, etc on that breaker will utilise the GFCI protection. You may have problems with it tripping if you plug in a motor (vacuum, etc) on the circuit.

It depends. It could be improperly installed. Outlets can be GFI protected by using a GFI rated breaker in the main panel box. Look for a breaker in the panel box that has a push to test button on it. Press the push to test button then plug something into the outlet to see if it still works. If the breaker turns off the power then it is GFI protected. To reset it flip the breaker to the fully of position then back to the on position.


Does garbage disposals have a breaker?

Yes but the breaker would be at your electrical panel, they do not have a breaker connected to the garbage disposal but they do have a reset button on the bottom of the garbage disposal. Most modern homes also have a GFI outlet linked to the garbage disposal. If your disposal is tripping breakers or GFI outlets I would consider that something is very wrong with your disposal, or you installed one with to much power!

A GFCI receptacle can pass it's "protection" to other outlets wired from it. If the GFCI trips, all outlets wired from it will "trip" also. A GFCI tripping will not necessarily trip the circuit breaker in the service panel.


The light on my gfi outlet is dim and sometimes out i am getting no power to it but the circuit breaker is not tripped i just replaced the gfi and it didn't help any ideas?

If the GFI outlet is tripped (the outlet, not the breaker) then it is telling you there is a ground fault which must be fixed. If the GFI outlet is not tripped, and the breaker is not tripped, but it is still not providing power, then you have a loose connection or a wiring error.
