Why is the answer derived from an algorithm not the same as an average for example IQ scores are not an average of the subtest scores but a score derived from an algorithm?

it is obvious the average is not by just one person it is by a group of people so you need to ask a group of people what their IQ is and add them all up then divide them by the number you used

What does this sentence Where the Best Is None Too Good mean?

Even the best of a certain group is not very good. For example, in bowling, a score of 100 or less is not very good. If three people bowl and get scores of 70, 60 and 58, the person who scored 70 did not really do that well. However, the 70 was the best in the group. That bowling group was one where the best was none too good.

What is the statistical difference between a mean and a median?

Mean and median are two of the measures of central tendency. They are numbers that give you information about a group of scores. This is important, because you can't very well go around reciting all the scores of a given sample whenever you need to look at or use the sample. The mean is another term for simple average. You add up all the individual scores, and then divide the sum by the number of scores. If your scores are:1, 2, 3, 6, 8, 14, and 90 then you take their sum, 124, and divide it by 7, the number of scores. You get 17.71, the mean. The mean takes into account the value of every single score. This means that the value of every single score "pulls" the mean toward itself. If any value changes, the mean changes. The median is the score that divides the collection of scores in such a way that half the scores are smaller, and half the scores are larger. Using the same scores above, (they have to be in order) you see that 6, the middle score, divides the group of scores in this way. Three scores are lower, and three are higher. So 6 is the median score. When you have an even number of scores, go half-way between the two middle-most scores. You can see that you could change the actual values of the scores in any number of ways, and still have the same median. This may seem odd, but there may be times when you want your 'estimate' of the population value to be "higher than correct" no more often than it is "lower than correct".

How do you interpret percentile ranking when the average score is 23 percent?

To interpret percentile ranking you must know the percentage of the group. Arrange the scores from the highest to the lowest. Compute the percentage of people with scores below 23%, and compute the percentage of people with scores at 23%. Add the percentage of people with scores below the score to one half the percentage of people with scores at the score to obtain the percentile rank. e.g If there were 20 children with varying scores, and 23% was the only score obtained by a student; then one score is (1/20) of the class, or 5%. 2 children scored lower than 23%; so (2/20) of the scores is below 23. The child with 23% will receive a percentile rank of 2+(half of 5)=4.5%. Brenda

How do you calculate an average?

The average is also called the 'mean' which is the sum of the values divided by the number of values used. It represents the number that all the values in the group would add up to if they were all the same number.Say you want the average score for 17 students who took your art history exam. You add the 17 individual scores together. Then you divide this sum by 17, the number of scores being averaged. The answer you get is the average, or mean score on the exam.An average may be an integer, a fraction, a mixed number, or a decimal number, and it could be positive, negative, or zero too, if some or all of the items in the group are zero or negative. To calculate the average of a group of numerical items:Add up all the items in the group.Divide the sum by the number of items in the group. The quotient is the average of the group.Another Example:Four students pick apples: one has 3, one has 4, one has 5, and one has 8.To evenly divide the apples, you would find the average (sum/number of values).3 + 4 + 5 + 8 = 20, divided by 4 students is 20/4 = 5 apples.
