It is likely you will need a newer processor to move to PCI-X as many of the boards that support PCI-X require a different processor than those commonly found on HP Desktops made in the last 5 years. You cannot really get around this, if you want better performance, you will have to upgrade. Even upgrading has its hardware limitation.
