A random galaxy is used in the "Correlation function" [See Link] to describe the possibilities of another galaxy being found within a certain distance.

Given a random galaxy in a location, the correlation function describes the probability that another galaxy will be found within a given distance.

See related for types of galaxies.

What is correlation function?

Correlation function is a statistical tool that connects or measures the distance of two random variables in space or time.

What does no correlation mean in a function?

It means that there is no linear relationship between the argument of the function, x, and the functional value, f(x) or y.

Relationship between two variables?

A mapping, perhaps. It need not be a function. The square root of a number, for example is a mapping but not a function (it is one-to-many). It is not correlation because correlation is only a measure of a LINEAR relationship. If two variables have an even relationship (eg quadratic), the correlation between two symmetric points will be 0 even though there is a clear functional relationship.

What type of correlation is one that curved?

Correlation cannot accurately describe any type of curve. The correlation of a curve would be a linear approximation rather than an accurate description of the data. Giving a function would more accurately describe data that lies on a curve.

What is the relation of probability with other subjects?

A correlation function is the correlation between random variables at two different points in space or time, usually as a function of the spatial or temporal distance between the points. If one considers the correlation function between random variables representing the same quantity measured at two different points then this is often referred to as an autocorrelation function being made up of autocorrelations. Correlation functions of different random variables are sometimes called cross correlation functions to emphasise that different variables are being considered and because they are made up of cross correlations.Correlation functions are a useful indicator of dependencies as a function of distance in time or space, and they can be used to assess the distance required between sample points for the values to be effectively uncorrelated. In addition, they can form the basis of rules for interpolating values at points for which there are observations.Correlation functions used in astronomy, financial analysis, and statistical mechanics differ only in the particular stochastic processes they are applied to. In quantum field theory there are correlation functions over quantum distributions.

Auto correlation and cross correlation?

Auto correlation is the correlation of one signal with itself. Cross correlation is the correlation of one signal with a different signal.

What is the difference between Multicollinearity and Autocorrelation?

The difference between multicollinearity and auto correlation is that multicollinearity is a linear relationship between 2 or more explanatory variables in a multiple regression while while auto-correlation is a type of correlation between values of a process at different points in time, as a function of the two times or of the time difference.

Is 0.5 the strongest correlation coefficient?

No. The strongest correlation coefficient is +1 (positive correlation) and -1 (negative correlation).
