Let the bases be x+2, x and the height be x because it's the same size as the smaller base:

1/2*(sum of parallel bases)*height = area

1/2*(x+2+x)*x = 42 sq cm

Multiply both sides by 2:

(x+2+x)*x = 84

Multiply out the brackets:

x2+2x+x2 = 84

2x2+2x-84 = 0

Solving the above quadratic equation works out as:

x = -7 or x = 6 it must be the latter because dimensions can't be negative.

Therefore: height = 6 cm

Check: 1/2*(8+6)*6 = 42 sq cm

Does the area of the trapezoid double if the height double?

If the base length b and the top length a remain the same, then the area will double if the height his doubled.Area = ((a+b) x h ) / 2Please note that a trapezoid has the top a and base b parallel.

Formula for volume of a trapezoidal prism?

the volume of a trapezoidal prism is equal to the height times the base area of the trapezoid. First you find the area of trapezoid h(a+b)/2 h is the height of the trapezoid, not the height of the prism a is the length of the top b is the length of the bottom Then you find the volume of the trapezoidal prism with this formula H*h(a+b)/2 H is the height of the prism. Multiply H by the area of the trapezoid that you found in step one.
