The fact that all units for measuring the same attribute are multiples or factors of 10 (or 1000, which is 10*10*10). And since we count in tens, all that is required is to move the decimal place left or right.

For example,

1 kilometre = 1000 metres = 1,000,000 millimetres = 1,000,000,000 micrometres.

Easy!

Now try and remember these conversion factors:

1 mile = 8 furlongs = 1760 yards = 5280 feet = 63360 inches.

Not only that, but with the metric system, similar names (and relations) apply to volumes, mass etc.

With the Imperial system, its a whole new set of factors/multiples for mass, and yet another set of factors/multiples for volume.
