Negative square roots are just the opposite of positive square roots. Since square roots (of positive numbers) are real, the negative square roots are also real.

Square roots of negative numbers are not real.

Note that -1 = exp(Pi*i), so (-1)^(1/2) = exp((1/2)*Pi*i) = i.

Note that exp(i*x) = cos(x) + i*sin(x), for instance by taking derivatives:

(d/dx)(exp(i*x)) = i*exp(i*x), and

(d/dx)^2(exp(i*x)) =(-1)*exp(i*x).

This means that the second derivative of exp(i*x) equals -exp(i*x).

The same property holds for cos(x) + i*sin(x):

(d/dx)(cos(x) + i*sin(x)) = -sin(x) + i*cos(x)

(d/dx)^2(cos(x) + i*sin(x)) = -cos(x) - i*sin(x) = -(cos(x) + i*sin(x)))

Hence cos(x) + i*sin(x)) = C + Dx + exp(i*x), for some C and D.

Comparing the values on both sides for x = 0, we find:

1 = C+1, so C = 0 and for the first derivative:

i = D + i, so D = 0.

So cos(x) + i*sin(x)) = exp(i*x) for all x.

by comparing x=0 for both functions and their first derivative. Since they coincide,

How do you mark square roots on a number line?

This can not be done. Every non-negative number on the number line is the square root of its square. You would have to mark every number from zero on.

Are fractions real numbers?

Yes. A real number is any number that could be plotted on a number line. For example, 3/4 could be plotted on a number line, and so it is real. Only square roots of negative numbers are not real: they are called imaginary.

Where would the negative square root of 16 be on a number line?

Four places to the left of zero.

How do you find the square roots of fractions?

Square rootsTo find the square root of a number, you want to find some number that when multiplied by itself gives you the original number. In other words, to find the square root of 25, you want to find the number that when multiplied by itself gives you 25. The square root of 25, then, is 5. The symbol for the square root is . Following is a partial list of perfect (whole number) square roots.Note: If no sign (or a positive sign) is placed in front of the square root, the positive answer is required. No sign means that a positive is understood. Only if a negative sign is in front of the square root is the negative answer required.A fraction, or fractional number, is used to represent a part of a whole. Fractions consist of two numbers: a numerator (which is above the line) and a denominator(which is below the line).So to work out the square root of a fraction you find the square root of the numerator and put it above the square root of the denominator.

How is an imaginary number defined?

An imaginary number is a continuous quantity that is the square root of a negative number and cannot be represented on the real number line.

Adding a negative number is the equivalent to moving to the left on a negative-positive number line.

always a negative number. just think about going backwards on a number line.

Why is the number line of a number is never negative?

A number line can have both positive and negative numbers. You can put the number line in any position, but often it is represented so that numbers to the right of zero are positive, and numbers to the left of zero, negative.

What is a negative subtracted by a negative?

Subtracting a negative number has the same effect as adding a positive number - think of it as moving right on a number line whereas, subtracting a positive number will move you left on a number line.
