A nominal variable is where you assign a number to a category. Imagine a variable called "animal" where 1=sheep, 2=cow, 3=dog, etc. Calculating the average, standard deviation or other continuous measures of "animal" in this context wouldn't make any sense. That is, an average "animal" of, say, 4.567 with standard deviation of 1.234 doesn't mean anything.

You could, however, calculate a mode, which is the most frequently occurring category.

What type of variable is gender?

Nominal (categorical), and Dependent (it is measured and accounted for, but a researcher cannot manipulate gender).

When does it make sense not to connect points on a coordinate graph?

There are a number of situations when it does not make sense. Among these, the two main reasons are:The variable along the x-axis is nominal (categorical) or ordinal. The variable along the y-axis is not continuous.

Is work settings nominal or ordinal?

They are nominal.

Different types of variables?

In statistics or data management, there are two main types of variables. Each of these types of variables can then be divided into two more types of variables.1. Categorical variableA categorical variable is commonly known as a qualitative variable. Every response can be placed into a category. A response may fit into a specific category (mutually exclusive), or it may fit into a category such as "other" along with other responses (exhaustive). Categorical variables are either nominal or ordinal. A nominal variable is a word that describes a category (i.e. horse, dog, cat) and the order does not matter. An ordinal variable uses categories that have to be placed in an order (i.e. very bad, bad, ok, good, very good).2. Numeric variableA numeric variable is a variable that is expressed by a real number. It is commonly referred to as a quantitative variable. Numeric variables can either be continuous or discrete. A continuous variable is variable that can assume an infinite number of real values (i.e. 2.345....). These variables are often grouped into class intervals. A discrete variable is a variable with a finite number of real values (i.e. shoe size).Grade 12 Data Management class

No. It is a discrete quantitative variable.

What is nominal and ordinal in qualitative variables?

Nominal and ordinal variables are both qualitative or discrete variables. Nominal variables allow for only qualitative classification while an ordinal variable is a nominal variable, but its different states are ordered in a meaningful sequence.

Difference between nominal and real variable?

A nominal variable is a variable measured in current dollars (the value of the dollar for the specific period discussed), and a real variable is a variable measured in constant dollars (the value of the dollar for the base period). That is, a real variable adjusts for the effects of inflation.

Is a nominal variable a discrete variable?

No. A discrete variable is one that takes discrete numerical values. But a discrete variable can be ordered while a nominal one cannot. Age, in years, is a discrete variable, and you can say that a 10-year old is younger than a 20-year old who is younger than a 40-year old. Favourite fruit would generate a nominal variable but you cannot say that a banana is more than an apple which, in turn, is more than an orange, etc. (Remember, you are talking only of the nominal values of the fruit - not their price or size or nutritional value or any such characteristic.)

nominal GDP and real GDP.

Is months of the year a categorical variable?

It depends on how the variable is used. At its simplest, it would be a nominal or categorical value but, if used as part of a time series, it would be an ordinal variable.
