Does an octagon tessellate?

An octagon cannot tessellate because when you put about 4 together, there are gaps in between the shapes, which is not allowed in a tessellation. When you put together 5 octagon's, some of them are overlapping and there still are gaps. Therefore, an octagon cant tessellate.

I have just learned how to knit and have knitted 8x8 squares. I do not know how to put them together. Could you help me?

Put the right sides of two squares together and stitch them with wool, use an over stitch, put your needle onto the first two squares, push it through both squares then pull it out, pass needle over the top of the squares and do the same thing again. Keep wool tight so stitches don't show on the right side

Will a pentagon and square tessellate?

Not a regular pentagon (equal sides) and square. But suppose the pentagons are shaped like a child's drawing of a house: a square with a triangle on top where the triangle is a right isosceles triangle (90, 45, 45 deg). Align a line of these pentagons with their "rooves" facing up. Next put a second row of inverted pentagons on top - apex-to-apex. The holes left will be squares. So tessellate away.

What is tesalation?

Tessellation: to form or arrange patterns of shapes in a layout that leaves no gaps or overlays. So basically, its a series of shapes that are put together leaving no gaps or any overlaps. for example, lots of squares put together would leave no gaps but a circle wouldn't work because if you put them together they leave gaps.
