Whole numbers are easier to calculate with. For example if a dollar was not 100

cents but 122.5 cents, it will be really hard to work out change

Put simply, nothing we experience in our direct day to day life is in fractions until we do something to make it so - an orange is a whole fruit until we cut it into halves or quarters....
