It is not possible to solve for a value of X since there are three unknowns, X, v and W and only one equation. All that can be done is to make x the subject of the equation - that is, to express X in terms of the other two variables.

X2 - v = W2

X2 = W2 + v

X = +/- sqrt(W2 + v)
