8x = 2x + 2 -38

Now you can simplify the right side: 8x = 2x -36

And then you want to get the variables on the left side of the problem. So since 2x is positive, you want to subtract 2x from both sides of the equation.

8x - 2x = -36

Simplify the left side: 6x = 36

And then from there you can divide both sides by 6.

x = 6
