I've never had to use (-3x/-4y)+(-5n X -3p) on a daily basis. In real life, if you think about it, tax is a negative number.

Every debit entry in your checkbook is a negative number. It must be subtracted from a higher (hopefully) number. If you write checks for more than what is in the bank, your account will have a negative number balance, meaning that you owe the bank money.

Also, anyone working with digital electronics will always be working with negative numbers (voltages, etc.)
