First of all, my personal grammar hat would say lie, not lay, but I'm just a math guy.
You could be lying so that your feet are near the ground and your head is on the counter, so your body is at a 45 degree angle to the ground. Or maybe you're lying on a bed with your feet in one corner and your head in the opposite corner, so that your body is at a 45 degree angle to the side of the bed. You might even be lying half way between on your side and on your back, so that your back forms a 45 degree angle with the ground.
And if you say lying, not laying, then your tongue may be forked at half a right angle, so that you are telling lies at a 45 degree angle. :-(

A right angle is 90 degrees. That's like cutting straight across. A 45 degree angle is exactly half of that. Cut on the diagonal.
