  1. Convert the fractions to equivalent fractions all with the same denominator
    1. Find a common denominator; ideally this should be the Lowest Common Denominator (LCD) but if you cannot find this, just multiplying all the denominators together will work.
    2. Divide the common denominator by the denominator of each fraction (this will be a whole number) and multiply the numerator of the fraction by this result.
  2. Add the numerators
  3. Simplify the result.

Example: 2/5 + 3/8 + 1/2

LCD of 5, 8, 2 is 40 so:

40 ÷ 5 = 8 → 2/5 = 2x8/5x8 = 16/40

40 ÷ 8 = 5 → 3/8 = 3x5/8x5 = 15/40

40 ÷ 2 = 20 → 1/2 = 1x20/2x20 = 20/40

→ 2/5 + 3/8 + 1/2 = 16/40 + 15/40 + 20/40

= 16+15+20/40

= 51/40

= 111/40

By multiplying the denominators together this gives 5 x 8 x 2 = 80, so:

80 ÷ 5 = 16 → 2/5 = 2x16/5x16 = 32/80

80 ÷ 8 = 10 → 3/8 = 3x10/8x10 = 30/80

80 ÷ 2 = 40 → 1/2 = 1x40/2x40 = 40/80

→ 2/5 + 3/8 + 1/2 = 32/80 + 30/80 + 40/80

= 32+30+40/80

= 102/80

= 51x2/40x2

= 111/40

Using the LCD keeps the numbers smaller.

Meaning of adding of dissimilar fractions?

Dissimilar fractions have different denominators and their lowest common denominator must be found in order to add them up.

When adding or subtracting fractions what should you do first?

For adding or substracting fractions first of all we should calculate the LCM( Lowest Common Multiplier) of the denominators in both of the fractions.

What is a dissimilar fractions?

Dissimilar fractions are fractions that have different denominators.

How can you add similar and dissimilar fractions?

Adding similar fractions is easy, but adding dissimilar ones requires an additional step. Before you begin, you must know a few important key terms. First, the number on the top of a fraction is called the numerator, while the number on the bottom of a fraction is called the denominator. Similar fractions have the same denominator, also called a common denominator. To add dissimilar fractions (fractions with different denominators), you must first convert the fractions so that the denominators are the same.

Is dissimilar fractions can be discovered as proper fraction?

Dissimilar fractions may or may not be proper fractions.

What is disimiliar fraction?

Dissimilar fractions have different denominators.

Adding dissimilar fractions and whole numbers?

1. change the dissimilar fractions to similar fractions by getting the L.C.D or the least common denominator. 2. add the whole numbers and write down the given denominator. 3. reduce the answer to lowest term if possible.

What is the meaning of dissimilar fraction?

The meaning of dissimilar fractions is when there is a pair or more of fractions that don't have the same denominator.

How do you compare fractions in terms of similar and dissimilar fractions?

You can compare similar fractions by looking at their numerators. You can compare dissimilar fractions by converting them to similar fractions and looking at their numerators. You can convert a dissimilar fraction to a similar fraction by finding the least common denominator.

What are Dissimilar Fractions?

Dissimilar fractions are fractions whose denominators are not the same. for example 3/8 and 1/2, their denominators are 8 and 2.

What is the meaning dissimilar fraction?

They are fractions that have different denominators as for instance 3/4 and 5/8 are dissimilar fractions.
