All area measurements are in square something. If you are measuring in one direction (ie a line), then just the unit inches, feet, meters is used. If you measure anything other than a line, it is not just the unit. Area is two dimensional, so all area measurements are in square units to separate them from pure distance measurements like the length of a line.
