When you are multiplying with mixed number fractions, it becomes easier to work with improper fractions instead.

For example, 2 1/3 x 1 1/2 (two and a third times one and a half) is

2 x 1

+ 2 x 1/2

+ 1/3 x 1

+ 1/3 x 1/2

But with improper fractions, it's 7/3 x 3/2 = 7/2 = 3 1/2
