Because it's irrational. It goes on forever, the reason for this is that Pi is used to work out the circumference of a circle.

Circles don't have sides, so you can't times one by another to get the Area.

You have to use a number that goes on forever, because technically, a circle goes on forever.

Mathematicians wanted a number to work out circles. And after much calculation, they finally discovered an irrational number, Pi.

3.142. It cannot be turned into a fraction.

Why is pi day 2015 so special?

The date can be written as 3.14.15 which are the first digits of pi. That can only happen once every hundred years.

What is the circumference of a circle with a diameter of 1 inch?

You need the formula circumference = pi x diameter pi = 3.14.. This is by the way the definition of the special number pi.

Is the square of pi a rational?

No. Pi is a special kind of irrational number called a transcendental number. This means that no power of pi (other than 0), or any combinations of its powers is rational.

What is special about pi and what you have to use it for?

Pi is an irrational number, and is the circumference of the unit circle. It's a neat number to use in all sorts of circumstances.

If a circle has the diameter of 3 what is the cirumference?

The circumference is equal to the diameters times pi. Pi is approximately 3.14, so just multiply 3 x 3.14. If you have a scientific calculator, it will probably include a special key to give you a better approximation for pi.The circumference is equal to the diameters times pi. Does 5 times pi end?

No.You can do just about anything to pi, and the answer will still be a transcendental number (a special kind of irrational number than can't be the solution of an algebraic equation). The only thing I can think of is pi/pi =1 (or multiples of this).

What is special about the number pi?

It's the ratio between the circumference of any circle to its diameter.
