As part of multiplying or dividing fractions, mixed numbers are turned into improper fractions. Use the existing fractional denominator and multiply the numerator by the whole number.

Example :

3 1/5 as a fraction is [ 3 x 5/5 ] + 1/5 or 15/5 + 1/5 = 16/5.

As a general rule, proper fractions cannot turn into whole numbers and only in limited cases are improper fractions able to.

The only way a fraction becomes a whole number is if the numerator is a multiple of the denominator.

Subtract the given fraction from 1 and then add them together as for example:-

1 => 17/17 - 3/17 = 14/17 and 3/17+14/17 = 17/17 =>1
