The Pythagorean Theorem states that in a right triangle, a2+b2=c2, where a and b are the legs, and c is the hypotenuse.

Since you only know the hypotenuse and a leg, put the unknown side by itself, and the other two on the other side of the equal sign.

a2=c2-b2

Now plug in the numbers you know (c and b)

a2=122-92

a2=144-81

a2=63

Now take the square root of each side.

a=√(63)
