Well to put it simply if 'b' was taken out of the equation it simply wouldn't work.

here is a ritten example: a^2+b^2=c^2

a=2 b=3

now 2^2=4 and 3^2=9 so c^2= 13

now if we remove 'b': a^2=c^2

if a=2 as in our last example then this equation would be telling us: 2=13 and we all know 13 does not equal 2
