You take a number say 9... then you go a certain distance decreasing as you go from whatever number you subtract.

9-5=4

6-3=3

10- -4= 14

I like to think of it as a bank account. If I start with, say, 10 bucks

but I buy an ice cream cone that costs 3 bucks

10+ (-3)

then I am subtracting from my account for what I have now.

10 + ( -3 ) = 7

I have 7 dollars left.

But say I buy a 10 $ meal

7 + ( -10 )

Then I owe the bank money.

7 + ( -10 ) = -3
