When you enter a two-digit year value, Excel changes a two-digit year less than 30 to 20xx and a two-digit year of 30 and greater to 19xx. Use four-digit years to ensure that Excel interprets year values the way you intend, if necessary.

Any alphanumerical characters including punctuation marks is recognized as text in Excel, but digits alone would have to be formatted as text so the spread-sheet does not regard them as calculation values. Even then I have often found it necessary to precede a digit string with the single apostrophe (as for example, '1234 not just 1234). This apostrophe is recognized automatically as a control-code and does not appear on screen or in print.
