A variable is an unknown quantity symbolized by a letter (the most common variables are x y a b t but could be any letter desired). For example: 7-x=5 here the variable equals two and you figure that out by solving the equation by subtracting a positive seven from the left then to balance it out, subtract seven from the right too. Then you are left with -x=-2 so you divide by -1 on each side to get a positive x and you wind up with x=2
