When you have a minus and a plus sign together, you simply ignore the plus sign. For example -5 + -3 is the same as -5 - 3 which is -8.

If you have two minus signs together, you replace them with a plus sign. For example -5 - -3 is the same as -5 + 3 which gives -2.

At school I learned a simple rule: 'Minus a minus is a plus'
