When was analytic geometry invented?

Although Descartes is generally credited with inventing analytical geometry, several aspects had been used by the Greek mathematicians Menaechmus (4th century BC) and Apollonius of Perga (3rd century BC). Much later (11th century), the Persian mathematician Omar Khayyam, used methods which modern mathematicians consider akin to analytical geometry. In 1637 Rene Descartes published his work on the topic but it was incomplete and was in French. It took another decade or so before it was translated into Latin and some of the gaps filled that Descartes' ideas took off.

What thing was impossible for Descartes to doubt?

For Descartes, this was the fact that he existed as a thinker. He was perfectly sure he was thinking; and he was likewise convinced that to be thinking he had to exist as some kind of substance.

Some information about the cotribution of coordinate geometry to mathematics by Rene descartes?

Descartes' theory provided the basis for the calculus of Newton and Leibniz, by applying infinitesimal calculus to the tangent line problem, thus permitting the evolution of that branch of modern mathematics. This appears even more astounding considering that the work was just intended as an example to his Discours de la méthode pour bien conduire sa raison, et chercher la verité dans les sciences (Discourse on the Method to Rightly Conduct the Reason and Search for the Truth in Sciences, better known under the shortened title Discours de la méthode). Descartes' rule of signs is also a commonly used method in modern mathematics to determine possible quantities of positive and negative zeros of a function. Descartes created analytic geometry, and discovered the law of conservation of momentum. He outlined his views on the universe in his Principles of Philosophy. Descartes also made contributions to the field of optics. He showed by using geometric construction and the law of refraction (also known as Descartes' law) that the angular radius of a rainbow is 42 degrees (i.e. the angle subtended at the eye by the edge of the rainbow and the ray passing from the sun through the rainbow's centre is 42°). He also independently discovered the law of reflection, and his essay on optics was the first published mention of this law.[7] One of Descartes most enduring legacies was his development of Cartesian geometry, the algebraic system taught in schools today. He also created exponential notation, indicated by numbers written in what is now referred to as superscript.

Terms related to cartesian coordinate plane?

It was the French mathematician Rene Descartes who introduced the Cartesian plane and some of the terms are:- Horizontal x axis Vertical y axis Both axes have a number line and are perpendicular to each other at (0, 0) The origin is at the coordinates of (0, 0) The equations of straight line are plotted on it. The equation of a straight line is y = mx+c whereas m is the slope of the line and c is the y intercept

Why is that the axes of the cartesian plane are called x and y?

These are essentially arbitrary labels, but there is still some reason why those letters were chosen rather than some other letters such as a and b. Other letters are associated with a larger number of words which might turn out to be applicable to various graphs. A for altitude, b for babies, etc. X is the least used letter of the English (or French - Rene Descartes, inventer of the Cartesian coordinate system, was French)alphabet and therefore it seemed to be a good candidate for a new job, to stand for the unknown in an algebraic equation, and since y is the letter that comes after x, it seemed to have some logical connection, if you wanted to graph two variable quantities against each other.

What was the living conditions like for Rene Descartes?

Rene Descartes lived during the 17th century, a time of great societal change and upheaval. He was a philosopher, mathematician, and scientist, and he lived in various locations across Europe, including France, the Netherlands, and Sweden. While he experienced some comforts and privileges due to his intellectual pursuits, he also faced challenges such as political unrest and the risk of persecution for his unorthodox ideas.

Are their any modern changes or updates to the theory or contributions of Rene Descartes?

Not lately. He hasn't published anything in quite a while. But there are some rumors going around, repeated by some very reliable experts in the field, that Rene is working on a major manuscript, and that when he releases it, it'll really shake up a lot of the foundations of math. We should be ready.

Who is the french mathematician that invented Cartesian coordinate plane?

Rene Descartes, the surname means ( some charts or some maps) Descartes theorized than any equation can be expressed in graphical form, form follows family names! Descartes and the Cartesian idea became associated with the Cartesian diver, a toy deep-see diver that rises and falls owing to buoyancy and openings in the diver figure. It is probable this came along long after the death of M Descartes, but was bestowed in an honorary fashion- as were many of the (Inventions) of Leonardo Da Vinc i and closer to home, Franklin.
