If you understand how to do addition and subtraction, then we can use that to explain multiplication and division. Multiplication indicates that you perform an addition of a given number, a specified number of times. So for example, 3 x 4 means 4 + 4 + 4, which equals 12. You are adding up 3 of the number 4. Division is the opposite process, it asks, how many of this number would you have to add up to give this result. So 12/4 = 3. This means that you would have to add up 3 of the number 4 in order to get 12.

There are a few other rules which apply. Multiplication can be done in any sequence and will produce the same result. So we know that 3 x 4 gives the same result as 4 x 3. This remains true even if you are multiplying several numbers together, such as 3 x 4 x 5 x 9. You can do that in any sequence, and get the same result. Division is not like that. 3/4 is not the same as 4/3. Any number divided by 1 remains unchanged. And we do not divide by zero since the answer is infinity, which will create problems for our calculations. Those are the rules. Those who violate the rules will get wrong answers.
