These are characteristics that are not represented by values. Examples of qualitative data are favourite fruit, or colour of hair etc.

There may or may not be some ordering: as in never/rarely/sometimes/always or very poor/poor/indifferent/good/very good, where the frequeny or quality increases as you go from left to right but there are no numerical values attached to any of the categories.
