An independent variable is the part of an experiment that you control. You can change it and make it anything.

Such as an experiment dealing with the length of time it takes certain brands of Chewing Gum take to lose their flavor. The independent variable would be the brands of gum you decide to test, while the dependent variable would be the time it takes those brands to lose their flavor.
