"sum" is not the right word here. All the bits are not being added: there is an equals sign. But 9x plus 14x can only be 23x, so that 23x + 8 = 0. Take 8 from each side of the equality so 23x = -8, and then divide both sides by 23 to get x = -8/23

Don't confuse"x" with the multiplication sign. For that reason, in algebra, a curly x is used wherever possible.
