This is substituting a value for the letter.

For example in F = 9/5 C + 32

When the C is substituted by 10, the equivalent value of F can be found:

F = 9/5 × 10 + 32 = 50

(This is the formula to convert temperatures from Celsius to Fahrenheit.)

There can be more than 1 letter, for example in V = πr²h. Here:

V is the volume of a cylinder

π is the [Greek letter p and is used for the] ratio of a circle to its diameter and ALWAYS has the approximate value 3.1415927

r is the radius of the end of the cylinder

h is the height of the cylinder

V, r and h are specified by the problem, usually with one of them missing to be found by substituting the others in to the above formula, possibly requiring an algebraic rearrangement to make the unknown the subject. eg to find h given V and r, the formula is rearranged, making h the subject: v = πr²h → h = V/(πr²)
