Euclid discovered a great many geometrical principles in his book Elements. He was also influential in other areas of mathematics, but he is widely considered the father of geometry.

Egypt is considered to be one of first places on Earth, together with Incas and Maya cities, where in historic times geometry was extensively used. Before Egypt there was Babylon and some other places. Pithagorus, the father of geometry, gained large part of his knowlege in egypt.
Because René Descartes developed the Cartesian coordinate system, this system allows geometric shapes to be expressed in algebraic equations. Descartes' works is still today the basis in analytic geometry.

Euclid is considered the father of geometry. There are a number of other early contributors to this branch of mathematics, but it is Euclid who gave us the extraordinary mathematical text, Elements. Links can be found below for more information.
