Subtracting a negative is adding a positive: 1 and 2/5
Because 3 is greater than 1. I suppose it's possible to do it in your head, if you remember that in the world of fourths, 1 - 3 equals 2 but it's easier to subtract 3/4 from 17/4 or 3 and 5/4. As long as you can get to 3 and 1/2, it doesn't really matter, but don't tell your teacher I said that.
In order to add or subtract fractions, the denominator (bottom number) has to be the same. In order to make it the same, you find the LCM and multiply the fraction by whatever is necessary to make the denominator the LCM. FOR EXAMPLE: 1/3 + 2/5 The LCM of 3 and 5 is 15. To make the 3 in 1/3 15, you multiply the whole fraction by 5 over 5 (it simplifies to 1 so you aren't really changing the fraction by multiplying it by 1). 1/3 * 5/5 is 5/15 You multiply 2/5 times 3 over 3 using the same principle 2/5 * 3/3 is 6/15 NOW you can add 5/15 and 6/15 to get 11/15.
One "subtracts" or "subtracts from." I'm not sure how to "subtract by." Whatever.3/7 = 6/146/14 - 4/14 = 2/14 or 1/74/14 - 6/14 = -2/14 or -/1/7
you could get 3+3=5 but there is a very mathematical equation if you will to solve it. it takes dividing adding multiplying and subtracting by the multiples to figure it out. i am yet to find out what exactly this equation is.
