You have to make your unlike denominators to like. Do that by finding the common factor for each set of fractions. Remember, that what you do with the numerator you do with the denominator ( lets say you want to add 1/2 + 2/4)( divide or multi by the same factor) 1/2 = 1 x2= 2 this makes 2/4 and now you can add 2/4 + 1/4= 3/4 2 x2=4 Hope this helps. It hard to explain online like this.

How is adding like fractions and adding unlike fractions the same?

If the denominators are not the same, then you have to use equivalent fractions which do have a common denominator . To do this, you need to find the least common multiple (LCM) of the two denominators. To add fractions with unlike denominators, rename the fractions with a common denominator. Then add and simplify.

What types of problems can be solved using the the LCM?

Anything having to do with adding or subtracting unlike fractions.

What way is subracting fractions with unlike denominators like adding fractions with unlike denominators?

If the denominators are not the same, then you have to use equivalent fractions which do have a common denominator . To do this, you need to find the least common multiple (LCM) of the two denominators.

When is it useful to find the LCM or GCF of two numbers to solve a problem?

When adding or subtracting fractions with different denominators and when reducing fractions to their lowest termsWhen adding or subtracting fractions with different denominators their lowest common multiple is needed and when reducing fractions to their lowest terms their greatest common factor is needed.

Are the steps for like and unlike denominators the same or different?

It depends what you are doing with the fractions. If you are multiplying or dividing fraction, the denominators do not need to be the same and the calculation can be carried out immediately. If you are adding or subtracting fractions, the denominators must be the same; if you have different denominators, the fractions must first be changed into equivalent fractions with the same denominator. When the denominators are the same (or have been made the same as equivalent fractions from being different) the calculation can be carried out.

How does the concept of LCM relate to fractions?

When you are adding or subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, you need to find a least common denominator, or LCD. The process is the same as finding an LCM between two integers.
