The standard form of a linear equation is Ax + By = C, where A, B, and C are integers with a GCD of 1, A and B not both zero, A is positive, and if A is 0 then B is positive. Note that very few lines can be described in standard form because of the requirement for integer coefficients.

The slope intercept form of a linear equation is y = mx + b. To convert standard form to slope intercept form...

Ax + By = C

By = C - Ax

y = C/B - Ax/B

y = -Ax/B + C/B

So, m = -A/B and b = C/B. (Do not confuse B with b.)

Note that B can not be zero.
