Two methods:
Draw a straight line using a straight edge
Mark one point on it
Set a pair of compasses to 6cm
With the point on the mark, draw another mark with the compasses on the line.
The line between the two marks is a line segment of 6cm.
Using a rule marked in cm draw a straight line between the 0cm and 6cm marks along its edge.
I'd prefer to draw it with a pencil.

To draw a line that is 2.4 centimeters, take a ruler with metric measurements and start your line at zero. Stop drawing until you get to the fourth line past the 2 centimeters mark. The line you will have drawn will be 2.4 centimeters.

Draw a line segment 10 cm long. measure the first 4 cm and make that part darker.
First of all draw a line segment that is about 2 cm long between two points P0 and P1. At the one of the outer points, draw another line that is at an angle of 90 degrees from the first line segment. This will cause the new line segment to stand straight on the first segment. Draw another line segment between the not used endpoint of the new line segment, let's call it P2, and the not used endpoint of the first line segment. This will create a triangle. Now on the P2 endpoint, draw another line segment that is again at 90 degrees angle. Repeat the previous steps and you will have created a root spiral.
The partner lengths for a line segment 8 cm long are 1cm + 7cm, 2cm + 6cm, 3cm + 5 cm, and 4 cm + 4cm

IF it is assumed that the area in question is a rectangle, then the longest line segment that will fit in it is the diagonal. Then, by Pythagoras's Theorem, its length will be sqrt(272 + 212) = 34.21 cm (approx.)However, if it not a rectangle, all bets are off.A parallelogram with sides of 27 and 21 will accommodate a line segment that is a fraction short of 27+21 = 48 cm.
Any shape with such an area will do, for example: Draw a rectangle 1 cm wide and 47 cm long; Draw a rectangle 4.7 cm wide and 10 cm long; Draw an L shape with side lengths (going clockwise from the top) 1 cm, 19 cm, 13 cm, 2 cm, 14 cm, 21 cm.
