The number 4 has two factor pairs.
1 x 4 and 2 x 2
a prime number means it has only two factors 1 and itself. a composite number has more than two factors for example 3 is a prime number because its factors are 1 and itself. 4 is a composite number because it has more than two factors 1,4,2 6,9,10,12,4,8,and 20
Four
It is possible to predict the number of factors of a given number just from knowing the prime factorization. If you list the p.f. with exponents, add one to each exponent and multiply them, you will have the total number of factors. Sounds complicated. Let's look at some examples. 2 x 3 = 6 (2^1 x 3^1 = 6) Any number without an exponent actually has the implied exponent 1. Adding one to each and multiplying gives us 2 x 2 = 4 Six has four factors. That's two factor pairs. 2^3 x 3^2 = 72 4 x 3 = 12 72 has 12 factors. 6 factor pairs. Square numbers are tricky. 3^2 x 3^2 = 81 3 x 3 = 9 81 has 9 factors but 5 factor pairs, since one of the factors (the square root) will be listed twice in a factor pair. Any time you have an even number of factors, cut it in half for the factor pairs. Any time you have an odd number of factors, add one and cut it in half.
The number 10 can be the product of 2 and 5, 1 and 10. This means that 10 has 4 factors. :]
FactorsPerfect squares have an odd number of factors. If you think of factor pairs, the pair of factor that when multiplied together equals the given number, you realize that there are two factors for each pair until you come to the factor that when squared equals the number. For example, the factor pairs of 16 are 1 x 16, 2 x 8, and 4 x 4, giving us the factors of 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 - an odd number of factors.Prime FactorsHowever, the situation is different with prime factors. It will depend on whether you list every prime factor or only the distinct prime factors. There will always be an even number of prime factors because when you square a number, you double the prime factors, which means you have an even number. That is not the case for distinct prime factors, because when you square a number, you are not adding any additional distinct factors. So, in some cases, there will be an even number of distinct prime factors and sometimes an odd number. Some examples follow.4 = 2 x 2. There are two prime factors, but one distinct prime factor.36 = 2 x 2 x 3 x 3. There are four prime factors and two distinct prime factors.900 = 2 x 2 x 3 x 3 x 5 x 5. There are six prime factors and three distinct prime factors.
Factors for 4 are: 1, 2, 4 It has 2 pairs = 1 * 4 or 2 * 2
3 pairs of factors. They are: 1 and 20 2 and 10 4 and 5 Pairs of factors are numbers that you multiply together to make that number, e.g. 4x5=20. Trust me I'm a teacher!
Factor pairs are just the factors of a number listed in a different way. The factors of 20 are 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, 20 The factor pairs of 20 are (20,1)(10,2)(5,4)
4 pairs
1 and 20, 2 and 10, 4 and 5 are all of the pairs of factors of 20.
If you are talking about factors, which are the multiple pairs of a number. The factors of twelve would be 1 and 12, 2 and 6, and 3 and 4
No because its factors are: 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 which makes five of them
The difference is between factor pairs and distinct factors. With square numbers, one of the factor pairs will be the same number twice. When listing the distinct factors, that number is only listed once.
If a number is a perfect square, then you might say that one of its factors is a factor twice, so the list of factors has an odd number of entries. Example: 16. Factors of 16: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16. One of the "factor pairs" of 16 is [ 4 x 4 ], but '4' only shows up once on the list.
Factors are numbers you can multiply together to get another number. The factor pairs are: (1, 52) (2, 26) (4, 13)
There are not always an even number of factor pairs of a number - for example, prime numbers have an even number of factors, because they are divisible by themselves and 1, but this is only one pair of factors. However, for any square number, (for example, 3 x 3 = 9, 4 x 4 = 16), at least one of these factor pairs will consist of the same number repeated twice.
The four factors of 8 are 1, 2, 4, and 8. The factor pairs of 8 are 1 x 8 and 2 x 4.
