No matter what unit of measure a measuring tape uses primarily, there is a simple method for interpreting the lines on the board. The longest lines indicate whole unites (let's say inches for simplicity); the inches are divided in half and indicated by lines nearly as long as the inch lines; those units are further divided into half and so forth, indicated by lines of descending size.
