take the higher of the variables and subtract the number you have chosen as x. if you get a variable higher then zero you know you are correct.

you can use any number that has 8.5 then you just add more numbers after the 5. if you don't change the 8 or the .5 it will always be less then 8.6 and greater then 8.5
