An independent variable is a variable which, in the context of the experiment or the observations, can affect the dependent variable but is not affected by it. By contrast, the dependent variable is affected by changes in the independent variable. It is quite possible that there is no independent variable, as such, and each variable affects the other.

So suppose that concentration is a function of an arbitrary length (the length is what determines concentration). The dependent variable is the one that you look at as you alter something else (independent variable). Example you change the amount of light a plant gets, and measure the height the plant grows. The dependent variable is height, and the independent variable is length of light exposure.
