it is the formula for both a rectangle and a square.

remember a square is a rectangle, but a rectangle is not a square (what i mean is a square has to have all 90 degree angles and four sides that are all the same length a rectangle doesn't have all the same lengths. but a rectangle is a shape with all 90 degree angles, and a square fits that discription)
