If you want a real number as an answer, then there is no solution - no real number squared will give you a negative result.

If complex numbers are acceptable, just take the square root of the positive number, and add an "i" at the end. For example, the square root of (-4) is 2i.

Whether or not a complex number is acceptable depends on the kind of problem. The same happens for negative and fractional numbers; for some problems, a negative number is acceptable as an answer, for others not.
