There are two answers to this. 1) We evaluate from left-to-right. 10+10=20, 20x2=40. 2) We use the Order of Operations. Multiplication comes before addition. 10x2=20, 20+10=30.
It's obvious. Just add 10+10. And that equals 20. It is the same as 10x2=20.
