A function that is symmetric with respect to the y-axis is an even function.

A function f is an even function if f(-x) = f(x) for all x in the domain of f. that is that the right side of the equation does not change if x is replaced with -x. For example,

f(x) = x^2

f(-x) = (-x)^2 = x^2
