There are a number of ways to approach this, but let's go with an easy one. If your question is, "What is one sixth of 72?" we can figure this out simply by dividing 72 by 6, which gives us 12. Since the original question is five sixths, however, all we have to do is take that 12 and multiply it by 5, giving us 60.
(Alternatively, we could have figured out 72 x 5 and then divided by 6, but it was easier to figure out 72 divided by 6 first. But 72 x 5 is 360, and 360 divided by 6 is 60, so that works, too.)
What is often left out, or glossed over, or quickly forgotten about fractions is that it's just a division problem. 1/2 just means 1 divided by 2, for instance. If you can remember that, then all you have to do when presented with this sort of problem is multiply by the numerator, and then divide by the denominator. And it doesn't have to be in that order.
5/6 of 72 = 60
5/6 of 72 = 72*5/6 = 60
